HONDA‘S NEXT-GENERATION MODELS TO GET LIGHTER & SIMPLER

HONDA‘S NEXT-GENERATION MODELS TO GET LIGHTER & SIMPLER

According to reports in the Japanese media , Honda will now roll out a range of weight-saving measures for its next round of all-new models.

Vehicle bodies are now larger, stronger and safer than ever before. They're also much heavier than cars of years gone by, mainly due to the increased amount of steel used in constructing the chassis.

Many manufacturers are starting to use high-strength steels in critical parts of the car's frame , however Honda is also expected to start changing the way its vehicles are constructed to help shave even more kilos off the final product.
Instead of bolting exterior panels onto the chassis, Honda will instead weld these panels directly onto the car's frame; reducing the amount of fasteners and reinforcements used and thus lowering the car's overall mass.

More efficient designs for other car components will also reduce the amount of meterials used, as well as simplify production lines.

Honda's plan involves spending tens of billions of Yen to upgrade plants in Japan and overseas, with its smaller product lines the first to undergo the weight-saving initiative.

Honda's quirky N Box kei car ( pictured ) is the first model to feature the new construction techniques, and Honda says the new N Box is 10 percent lighter than its predecessor as a result.

Thanks to its simpler construction, the new N Box is also cheaper to build - something that Honda hopes will give it an edge in emerging markets like India and China.

AUDI A3 SEDAN CONFIRMS FOR 2012 IN INDIA

AUDI A3 SEDAN CONFIRMS FOR 2012 IN INDIA

If you dreamed of buying an Audi but the A4 sedan is a little beyond your budget, we bring to you a news that should set you excited.

The AUDI  has confirmed launching the new A3 sedan in 2012. Luckily for our India will be one of the first countries to get the new entry-level Audi. In all probability, the Audi A3 will be priced very aggressively to take on the arch rival-BMW.

The A3 is a part of a really long list of future Audi vehicles but the others from the list might not make it to the sub continent any time soon. The list includes the hybrid version of the luxurious A8 and the all electric version of the R8 sportscar. Also, Audi should be unveiling the revamped A4 at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo.

SPY SHOT OF BMW i8

              SPY SHOT OF BMW i8

The spy photos of the BMW i8 production prototype model. Seeing first time, this pre-production BMW i8 mule showing the what the i8 will look like with production body parts & styling.

Comparison to i8 Concept Model :

Although this pre-production i8 tracks the concept version's styling generally, as expected, there are some significant changes from the i8 concept model .The front fascia has lost a bit of its shark nose front slant with a new lower front bumper design, which protrudes more than that on the concept. Also, the headlights have been moved forward to the edge of the hood. This comes as no surprise considering the fact that the extremely deeply set headlights on the concept i8 would likely limit the area which the headlights can illuminate.

The hood and windshield are now more traditional and the windshield no longer joins the hood area as it did in the concept version. The doors now appear bigger, come down lower, and are no longer set deeper in than the rest of the car's side body panels. This should allow for much easier ingress/egress than the concept, which, because of its small door opening and thick doorsill, appeared very difficult to climb in and out of. The side view mirrors move from the concept's A-pillar to a traditional location on the doors and the door handles have moved down as well. The rest of the body sculpting on the lower sides of the car thankfully remain very similar to the concept i8.

The rear of the pre-production i8 sees the retention of the concept's shoulder wings and floating tail lights, but the lower part of the rear end is difficult to discern currently as it remains clad in very concealing camouflage. There appears to be several purposely placed camouflage panels to purposely deceive - for example, the two protuding bulbous round lights (which will certainly not be a part of the production car).

The pre-production i8 ditches the futuristic wheels of the concept models in favor of more traditional split-spoke alloy wheels, which appear to be wrapped in much thicker tires than those on the concept models.

A sharkfin atenna is attached to what is likely a carbon fiber roof.

Not much of the interior can be discerned from these photos.

Powertrain & Sales Target :

The concept i8 specs should give a great idea of what to expect for the production i8 model. The concept i8 features a high performance 3-cylinder petrol engine ( 164 kW ) in rear with i3's electric motor ( limited to 96 kW ) in front, resulting in total torque of 550 Nm (300Nm petrol engine + 250 Nm electric motor ).

Here are the concept i8's previously released vitals ( subject to change in the production model, of course ) :
·         3-cylinder petrol engine ( 164kw ) in rear with i3's electric motor  (limited to 96 kW ) in front
·         550 Nm ( 300Nm petrol engine + 250 Nm electric motor )
·         3 driving modes - electric, petrol, or both engines at once
·         1,480 kg
·         0-100kph ( 62mph ): 4.6 seconds
·          Top speed: 250kph  (limited )
·         2.7 L/100km fuel economy
·         35km pure electric range
·         4 seater
·         50:50 distribution
·         When to expect for launch : 2014

Sales and price targets for the i8 are yet undetermined, although it is known that the production i8 will launch in 2014. According to Ian Robertson, BMW’s global sales and marketing boss, "Our sales will strongly depend on legislation. Not only by big markets like the U.S. or China, but by local city authorities and their terms of taxation," Robertson said. "If a city like Amsterdam or London decides that you get a tax reduction, then sales will boost."

The Vision Efficient Dynamics concept on which the i8 is based is currently starring in Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol on the big screen.

TATA IS UPGRADING NANO CARS CABLES BEING RECALLED FOR REPLACING THE STARTER MOTOR

TATA IS UPGRADING NANO CARS  CABLES BEING RECALLED FOR REPLACING THE STARTER MOTOR

Tata Motors recalling as many as 140000 Nano compact cars for replacing the starter motor provided in them. We spoke about how Tata denied calling this exercise a ‘recall’ and labelled it as ‘replacement exercise’ being done to make the car perform even better. Now, it won’t be surprising if the deed is being done because of more than half a dozen incidents of the engine compartment of the car catching fire.

Today, we bring to you the information that the starter motor is not all that is being replaced by the manufacturer. The alternator and the accelerator cable of the car have shown many incidences of failure. This has lead to cases of Nanos being stranded in the middle of nowhere. The problem of snapping of the Nano’s accelerator cable is quite common.  These cables are being replaced by the manufacturer to improve the reliability of the car.

The 2012 Tata Nano comes factory fitted with upgraded started motor and cables and this upgrade sure makes the latest edition of the car much more trustworthy than the initial versions. This all appears to be an experience of  deja vu to us. Remember the Indica and Indica V2?

MARUTI SUZUKI GOING TO SHOWCASE A MINI CONCEPT OF SUV AT AUTO EXPO 2012

MARUTI SUZUKI GOING TO SHOWCASE A MINI CONCEPT OF SUV AT AUTO EXPO 2012

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) is going  to unveil a compact SUV concept at the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo. It seems like India’s leading car manufacturer will develop a product to take on the Premier Rio and upcoming Mahindra Xylo and S101 mini-SUVs. Korean automobile giant Hyundai is also planning to showcase a compact SUV at the expo, while we will see the global premiere of the Ford EcoSport crossover. The Ford EcoSport is based on the popular Fiesta’s platform.Maruti Suzuki’s official website is displaying some teaser images labelled as ‘upcoming attractions’ and by the looks of it, they sure belong to a compact SUV concept. It may be noted that the concept SUV’s grille pays homage to the one seen on the popular Suzuki Jimny. For those who are unaware of the capable off roader, Jimny is a successor to the legendary mountain goat- the Gypsy in many international markets.

In India, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL) has been selling the Gypsy on order and main customers include the armed and para military forces. Gypsy has a perception of being a guzzler and the lack of availability of a diesel engine has made it a lot worse. Gypsy’s successor will greet the market with an option of buying the SUV with either the technologically advanced K12 motor or the tried and tested VGT Multijet diesel engine, which might be just what the doctor has ordered.

Safely expect us to report more on this mini SUV in coming times. Stay tuned on automotoring.blogspot.com                    ..............

TATA MANZA HYBRID WITH REFRESHED AT AUTO EXPO 2012

TATA MANZA HYBRID WITH REFRESHED AT AUTO EXPO 2012

This image is only for illustration

Tata Motors is going to showing  big at the Auto Expo 2012. In the Auto Expo 2010, Tata showcased Tata Indica Electric Vehicle which was an instant attraction at the Tata Pavilion. This time, the eco-friendly car will be the Tata Indigo Manza Sedan with a Hybrid Drivetrain. We expected that it will be a highly fuel efficient Diesel-Electric Hybrid with Fuel efficiency of the tune of 30+ KMPL.

The refreshed styling EV became the blue print for the refreshed Tata Indica Vista for India. The new Tata Manza Diesel-electric Hybrid may be a glimpse of the exteriors of future Manza at the Auto Expo 2012. Hybrid cars are known for their high fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions as a combination of Diesel engine and Electric Motors run by battery can take on the load of the car differently under different driving conditions making the car run at the maximum efficiency levels at most of the times. This ensures better fuel efficiency and lower tailpipe emissions along with improved performance. The reason why we don’t see many such cars on India roads is that they cost more to manufacture and thus offset the fuel savings. But with constantly evolving technologies and drop in the price of Hybrid vehicles, the future does seem greener. Also with the rising costs of fuel, greener alternatives will make more sense in the coming years making Hybrid and electric cars more popular.
